r.. United States Soil
~~ Department of Conservation
~ ~ Agriculture Service
October 22, 1990
Mr. Wayne Mitchell PAGE 2
2. Top soil: During mining operations topsoil should be stockpiled to be
used in reclamation of the area. After mining operations are completed,
the area should be shaped and graded with no slopes exceeding 3:1. Any
area mined below the 100 year flood plain is to be backfilled to above
the 100 year flood plain. After scarifying, topsoil should be spread over
any disturbed area, except where buildings are to be built. The topsoil
is to be six inches to one foot thick. While topsoil is stockpiled it
will be seeded to Lincoln Smooth Brome grass at the rate of 19 pounds per
acre of Pure Live Seed. It will be seeded with a nurse crop of 15 pounds
of oats per acre. Seeding will be done between November 1 and May 1.
3. Cover Crop: After the topsoil has been spread over areas to be reclaimed
they should be seeded to a cover crop. Recommendations are to use a
hybrid forage sorghum. This should be seeded before July 1. The rate of
seeding recommended is about 15 pounds of seed per acre in 6" to 12" row
spacing. Should have at least 8" to 12" of stubble to seed grass into.
4. Fertilizer: Forty pounds of available nitrogen and forty pounds of
phosphorus (P205) per acre should be applied just prior to seeding. This
fertilizer should be mixed into the soil. Barnyard manure could be used
as a mulch and replace part of the fertilizer.
5. Seeding: Grass seeding should be done between November 1 and May 1.
Seeding should not be done when the ground is frozen. The seedbed should
be firm, moist and clean of weeds. Seeding can be made into a cover crop,
see item number 3 above. If a cover crop is not used then after the land
has been seeded it should be covered with a mulch. See item number 6
titled mulching.
The following is a seeding mix recommendation:
GRASSES 7 OF MIX SEEDING RATE*
Covington Blue Grama 25 .75
Vaughn Sideoats Grama 25 2.25
Arriba Western Wheatgrass 40 6.40
Lodorm Green Needlegrass 10 1.00
*Seeding rate of Pure Live Seed per acre. This seeding rate is for
seeding with a grass seed drill. Should broadcast seeding be done then
the seeding rate should be doubled. This seeding mixture can be changed
with approval of the proper authorities.
0
