Cola ndo 6020 <br />March 4, 19II0 <br />Alan Salter <br />General Manager <br />F:i.ng Cnal Mine <br />4424 County Road 120 <br />Hesperus, CO 81326 <br />Dear Mr. Salter: <br />This office received your correspondence of February 21, 1950, <br />requesting a 1) statement for the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation <br />l;oard concerning the cultural-historical impact of the King Coal Mine: <br />operation, as well as 2) information for the proposed federal lease. <br />We conducted a file search of the Colorado Archaeological Site <br />• iventory and the Colorado Inventory of Historic Sites, as well as <br />nominations pending or on the National Register of historic Places, <br />for Township 35N, P.ange 11W, and Sections 21 and 32, which would in- <br />clude the boundaries for the mine bench, the current federal coal <br />lease; and the appllcaCirni for coal leas r.. <br />There are no known Archaeological or Historical/Arcl~itecCUral <br />resources in the impact area of the proposed undertaking. <br />Rased on the information supplied in your correspondence, it <br />appears that there would no no further impact to cultural resources <br />due to the seriously disturbed nature of the terrain in the 5.36 acres <br />of Lhe mine-bench area. <br />However, despite the fact that there will be no surface disturb- <br />ances in the proposed coal lease area, these mining, operations will <br />possibly create an indirect impact on potentially eligible cultural <br />resources due Co the potential for vandalism on cultural resources. <br />There is always the possibi.liLy that •~rnidentified Cultural Resources <br />er.ist within this area. Therefore, a professional survey should be <br />conducted to Identify an}' Eligible Cultural Resources in the proposed <br />project area. <br />As you know, the ultimate responsibility for compliance with the <br />•~lational ]listoric I'reservaCion Act, as implemented in 36 CFR 800, <br />mains with the federal agency and cannot be delegated by it.
