I do not however feel thatthis project will pose any threat to them
or their habitat.because.of it's location south of the Arkansas River.
Critical Iabitats/vegetative communities impacted:
None that we are aware of.
Assessment; of Smpact:
The impact of this pit should be minimal since it is adjacent to the Valco vravel pits
and is in close proximity to Lamar. However, it is in very close proximity [o [he
Arkansas River and care will have to be taken not to disturb, pollute, or impede the
river in any way, especially with heavy equipment.
Mine Reclauaation recommendations (include key species habitats for which restoration
(;~ is designed.
I recommend that the pit be grade & sloped to 3:1 or less and reseeded with grasses and forties
~~ that enhance ,am =_ bird nesting. Tall Wheat Jose, Switch grass, Sand Bluestem, Western LJheat-
grass, Crested W~ea[, and Side Oats Gramma along with Yellow Clover and Ladak Alfalfa are the
hest species. Tl~e establishment of shrub thickets would not only provide food & cover for
wildlife but als~~ an esthetic improvement for the disturbed site. Recommended species to
plant, in order ~~E preference, are Wild Plum, Buffaloberry, Chokecherry, Wild Rose, & Sand-
hi11 Cherry. A maintenance free system of planting the ti~we shrubs is described by Warren
Synder in the Ap:-i1-May 1983 iss e of Colorado Outdoors,,a n'vtsion of Wildlive publication.
_ ?~.,
Continued at bot~-om of page * ~~~~~ ,~~-/!J i''~ ~~ ~~ ', %!D~ l/ '7/ ~I 7
Prepared liy: •~ ~ • ~~ w i~ Date: ~
Submitted By: ~~~~~~^~ if'~1~~- --- Date: .,7~~
•- If at all pos;:ible, the planting of some CotCOnless Cottonwoods or Russian Olives [o be^^-
fit raptors and other bird species.
~'
