Box 535 <br />Somerset, CO 81434 RECEfVE~ JUt 0 6 1995 <br />Dear Mr. Anderson: <br />• <br />At your request, I surveyed the proposed site for the Mest Valley Fill, to be <br />used as a coal raste storage area, for the Grand Mesa penstemon, The Grand <br />Mesa penstemon, Psnsttreon p~nsarum, 1s a proposed candidate for listing as <br />threatened or endangered. The site 1s located in Tornshlp 13 South, Range 90 <br />Nest, section 8, south half of the southrest quarter, on the north side of <br />State Hlghray 133. The site averages an elevation of approximately 6200 feet <br />and 11 es 1n a vegetative comaunlty of oakbrush, mountain mahogany, mock <br />orange, pinyon-~unlper, clover. mountain broms. cheatgrass, and <br />needle-and-thread. The storage area has tro main components: a fill area <br />rhich rill cover approximately 2 acres, and a leaching pond rhich rill be <br />approximately 1/2 acre. Other disturbance 1n the area rill be construction of <br />roadways for access and diversion ditches. <br />Upon completion of the field survey, no penstemon species rere located on the <br />site or in the general area.
