• ; •
species suitable for the site. Qnee established. the grasslands should be maintained in a manner that
' will encourage their health and vigor.
5. Tree plantings along the River should consist of species commonly found in the lower South Platte
Basin. Russian olive, elms and Purple Loosestrife should not be used in any plantings. Careful
' consideration should be given to whether it is appropriate or wise to spend time and money for
woody plantings in areas where beaver will visit. Woody plantings can be protected from beaver.
but it is a and time-consuming effort.
' 6. Permanent fencing on the site should be a design that will allow free movement ofwildlife. Fencing
should not be constrtrded that will funnel wildlife onto or across Highway 263.
7. Should the site be selected for baIl fields, they should be placed to the north end of the property
' away from the River. There should still be a bah of riparian vegetation established along the River
and araurtainPdm a nahual fashion.
' 8. Should the site be graveled; reclamation phmsfor the prtsshould emphasize irregular shoreline
contour, varying shoreline slopes (2:1 to 10:1), islands and varvng pond bottom contours. Lfthe
recla®ed ponds are ]neck as is the current praexice along the South Platte Basoz, the City should
' insist on adequate storage capacity to maintain a conservation poor In the MLRB permit the stated
reclamation plea for the ponds should include use as a recreatioaak warm water fishery post atining.
The mining plan should provide for a setback, no less than 150 yards from the river centerline,
' adequate to provide a viable wildlife movement comdor.
9. Close proximity to the City effluent treatment plant may make this parcel a good candidate for
developing a facilitated wetland treatment site for ell3rrent-treatment. This technique has been used
' in many municipalities as a cost effective. wastewater treatment technique that also benefits wildlife
and the environment. The City should explore this option and- ia>Plement it if it proves beneficial.
' I have appreciated the opportunity to brainstorm on this pazceL It is a most exciting opportunity to
implement plans that wiIl have muhiple benefits. Regazdless of how yotr develop this site h wrll be a
' tremendous i~rovement over what was there! As you go forwazd with your phmning let me know
which way you're going on this. Projectsthat benefit the environtneat and widlife habitat maybe
eli~~ble for partial fimdmg under a variety of programs. I will keep my ear to the ground and let you
' know if I heaz of any programs that may provide some finrding for thisproject. Give me a call if you
have any questions.
Best Regards,
~~
' Larry Rogstad
Cc Dave Clarkson, Area Wildlife Manager
Mike Sherman, Area Ilabitat Biologist
t

1
IJ
