...._K.
POST ESTA$LISFMEf7T MANAGI~IENT
Many reclamation efforts are unsuccessful for lack of continuing management.
Reclamation plantings often require two or more years to maintain themselves.
Tie following items should be included in a fallow-up management plan:
1. Fencing - One sYa~31 break in a fence will destroy its usefulness.
Grazing must be deferred for at least tro years after establishment;
fence maintenance is a must.
2. Mulching - The planting must be examined periodically to determine
if the mulching medium is intact. Mulch is sometimes needed for
two or three years after planting.
3. Weed control - Preparing a site for reclamation planting also pra-
parea the site for competing and perhaps undesirable weed species.
Weed competition may prolong the establishment period.
4. Supplemental rater - If supplemental water is used, maintenance oY
the systems must be included in management.
5. Planting evaluation - Although not generally part of a post-estab-
lishment management fan, ell plantings should be evaluated to gain -.
information that would be useful in subsequent reclamation projects.
6. Reseeding - Area rhere seeding has failed because of weed takeover,
drought, blorout, overgrazing or any other reason will be reseeded.
The renovation area should be disked and reeds controlled, then re-
seeded rith the original seed mi= and mulched.
~. Proper Grazing Use - If the arse is to be grazed, a minimum of two
years or until the stand is rell established is required. When
grazing, at least half of the current years grorth will be left on
the area.
8. Soil tenting - Monitoring of the soil fertility is needed to insure
that enough plant nutrients are available for stand maintenance or
impiā¢ovenent.
9. Fertilization - Application of fertilizer according to soil test
results rill insure stand maintenance.
10. Maintenance of structural practices - Practices installed for erosion
control and protection of areas will be maintained to insure proper
operation and to extend the usefulness of the practice.
11. Correction and control of unforeseen problems - When new problems
develop the situation rill be corrected or controlled as rapidly
as possible.
