~• Geohydrology
The general geologic setting of the 2 West Extension area does not
differ substantially from that of the permit area. The western margin of
the underground workings will be determine by the dip of the coal seam.
Based upon drilling, remote sensing, and field observations, Empire Energy
expects that the dip of the F coal seam will exceed 14 degrees (25°) in
the area shown in Figure 1. It is upon this projection that the mine
plans have been amended to extend to the west.
Geographically, the workings of the extension area will average 6,000
feet above sea level. This compares with an average topographic elevation
• in the area of 6,700 feet. The Yampa River lies in a valley known as the
C Round Bottom, with an average elevation of 6,100 feet. The workings will
extend to within 4,500 feet horizontally of the Round Bottom.
Structurally, the workings within the 2 West extension lie on the
western limb of the Williams Fork or Moffat Anticline which is coterminous
with the Round Bottom Syncline, the axis of which runs northwest-southeast
through the center of the Round Bottom. It should be noted that the
existing permit allow mining on the western side of the Williams Fork
Anticline to the extent of approximately 50 acres.. Because much of the
groundwater flow in the Yampa River basin is controlled structurally, it
is assumed that the western side of the Williams Fork Anticline
constitutes a ground water basin different from that of the remainder of
• the permit area.
~-
(REV. 11/Z1/83)
