<br />CLEN JOHNSTON <br /> <br />'these pits are located about 3 miles east of Divide, Colorado. The elevation <br />is about 9000 feet above sea level. One pit has a north aspect with about a <br />45-50% slope. The other site is a south facing slope with about a 15% slope. <br />Both sites are mostly woodland. <br />SOILS <br />Soil at this site is the Unit called X54. Fnr a complete description of <br />this unit, see attacf~ment A. <br />CLIMATIC INFORMATION <br />Average annual precipitation varies from 15 to 20 inches, but may be as <br />low as 12 inches if all other growth factors are favorable. About 50% of <br />this coiues between May 1 and September 30. Hard, spotty rains are common <br />in .Tuly and August, while June is generally lacking in moisture. The optimum <br />growing season for the mayor native plants i~ May 15 to August 15. <br />NATIVE VEGETATION <br />(In Grassy Areas of Pits) <br />Bunchgrasses give this site a grassland aspect. The dominant grasses are <br />Arizona fescue, mountain muhly, Junegrass, Parry oatgrass and pine dropseed. <br />Other grasses that may occur are western wheatgrass, nodding brome, squirrel- <br />tail, needlegrasses, native bluegrasses, sheep fescue, bluegrama and sedges. <br />Common forbs found in the plant community include yarrow, lupine, pentstemon, <br />American vetch, golden pea, buckwheat, and bluehell. Shrubs such as mountain <br />m:ihol;any, snowberry, skunkbrush, current, and gooseberry may appear as scattered <br />and isolated plants, especially on the shallow rocky areas. <br />Native vegetation found at this site and estimated species composition are: <br />Arizona fescue 15"/, <br />Slender wheat 5% <br />Mountain muhly 35% <br />Junegrass 10% <br />Fringed sage 15% <br />Mountain brome 5% <br />Bluegrama 5% <br />S.Cinquiefoil 5% <br />Other grasses b forbs 10% <br />This site is in poor vegetation condition. <br />Total Mnual Production <br />Favorable years 1800 Pounds Per Acrc Air Dry <br />Unfavorable years 1000 " " " " <br />Median years 1400 " <br />
