lO Most areas of th ounit are used for rwi Idl ifo)ab-i`tat _and I imited
- livestock grazing. A few areas are used for the development of coal.
and natural gas .
Livestock grazing is limited because of the sparseness of
vegetation, steepness of slope, and poor access .
Plant species present on the lower elevations of this unit include
Salina wildrye, Indian ricegrass , bIuebunch wheatgrass, forbs,
shadscale, Wyoming big sagebrush, small low rabbitbrush, plains
pricklypear, and prairie junegrass, with a thin overstory of Utah
juniper.
Plant species present on the upper elevations of this unit include
western wheatgrass, Salina wildrye, forbs , Wyoming big sagebrush,
shadscale , Utah serviceberry, Indian ricegrass , and Gambel oak , with a
thin overstory of Utah juniper.
If the condition of the range deteriorates , shrubby species and
• trees increase . If the range condition continues to deteriorate
cheatgrass and Russian thistle invade . The potential production of
the native understory vegetation in normal years is about 200 pounds
of air—dry vegetation per acre . The suitability of this unit for
rangeland seeding is low. The main limitations for seeding are
droughty soils , steep' slopes, and rocky soils.
Pinyon pine and Utah juniper have limited economic value . Some
are used as a source of firewood, fence posts, and Christmas trees.
However, in most areas steepness of slope limits access to the wood
—'-- products.
This unit is used 'extensively:. as' winter range and:;cover for. mule .
deer and elk because- it 'is mainly"on south—facing: slopes"'rw
hich. are. -
accessible most ' of^ the`winter
.Yam..
.'' _ `•f_'bY ;/`r` __ __ vim. -. . - Ck.i`- "ta _`i -_
',J.<I .-e:;' - -•)- ne ''`L9'-1'`'_Y.a",'3.
