The pit
is located on a high terrace lying from 150 to 200 feet above the adjacent
stream valleys and is generally underlain by gravelly alluvial materials
deposited by these streams in ancient times.
It is presently used as range pasture and will be reclaimed for that
purpose after the gravel deposits have been removed.
The deposits will be excavated to an average depth of 10 feet, processed
on sight and used in road construction throughout Otero County.
After these terraces are removed, slopes will be shaped whereby a gentle
rolling tarrain will result.
The existing overburden of these deposits are of such composition that
it makes excellant binding material for the county's road base material.
Top soil will therefore be hauled in from borrow pit cleaning and previously
deposited blow dirt from adjacent county owned land to be used in the re-
clamation process after the mining is completed.
The subsurface stratum over which the gravel deposits are located is
made up of consolidated and unconsolidated clay materials. The pit is
currently being worked [o this depth.
As can be seen from the drawing (Exibit C) the pit area is not large
enough to accomodate a phased reclamation plan. This is due to the large
area needed in the pit bottom for processing operations and the method in
which the pit faces are worked simultaneously to derive a well sorted
aggregate mixture.
In view of these facts we plan to mine the terraces until the deposit
is exhausted then reclaim the entire area at one time. At this time it is
estimated the deposite will last until 1990 with the county's current demand
from this pit.

AUG 1 6 ly;g
PAIRED lA1!(1 RECLAaggTinv
Colo.
