3. PRE-tQINING LAND USE
Mine Site
The Henderson Mine is located very near the headwaters of
the West Fork of Clear Creek. Access to the valley is restricted on
three sides by surrounding mountains. The "box canyon" type of
situation made the valley a popular site for bootleggers in days gone
by because the single-direction access allowed easy detection of
approaching revenuers.
Several mines were actively prospected in Clear Creek
C~
Valley. The Puzzler Mine, located just up from Berthoud Falls, is
still periodically operated in search of silver and gold. The Jean
Mine and the Doctors Group of mines are located above the Henderson
Mine in the Clear Creek watershed. The Urad Mine, a molybdenum mine
located on Woods Creek, was operated by various companies through the
years, the last of which was AMAX. The Urad ore body was depleted and
the mine closed in 1974. Final comprehensive reclamation of Urad is
well underway.
More recently, the canyon held a number of mountain cabins
and was described as "rapidly becoming a mountain slum" by a member of
the environmentalist community. Most of these cabins were removed
from the area during the initial stages of development.
The Henderson ore body was discovered in 1965 as a direct
•
result of AMAX geologists exploring the possibility of "another Urad
ore body." Initial diamond drilling revealed no such ore body, but
the drilling provided geologic information indicating the possibility
of much deeper mineralization. Permission was granted for "one last
hole," which -- according to projected geologic modeling -- was
5-1
