RANGE SITE N0. 295 Pa•3e 3
ALKALINE SLOPES
August 1975
5. Soils
a. Soils in this site on the gently sloping benches are moder-
ately well developed solodized solonetz developing in
strongly alkaline saline outwash sediments with an AI, A2,
82, Bsa sequence. The texture varies from a heavy loam tc
sandy clay loam underlain by lime-coated gravel and sand.
Has an exchangeable sodium percentage of more than 15~ in
the 82 layer.
Other soils are shallow, very weakly: developed alkaline-
saline soils developing in sandy tc silty Coalmont materials.
It is characterized by severe erosion. Bare spots, slick
spots, deep gullies, and exposures of shala are commonly
associated with the site. Islands of good soil are mixed
with scabby areas.
Due to the sodium content, the soil is dispersed, causing
poor water intake rate and very slow subsurface permeability.
Poor soil moisture relationship creates a low site potential.
rtr~ li 0~%~ -~~
b.
