•
LJ
NOTICE OF INTENT TO EXPLORE
INVOLVING REbIOVAL OF 250 TONS OR LESS OF COAL
STOVE CANYON COAL EXPLORATION PLAN AREA
PAGE 14
Plans for Transfer and Modification of Exploration Drill Holes to Be Used as
Surveillance, Monitoring, or Water Wells
The operator may modify one of these coal exploration holes into a monitoring well.
§2.02.2(2)(h): Endangered or Threatened Species
Endangered or Threatened Species Surveys of the access roads and drill sites will be
performed during the July or August 2004 if required by the BLM.
The peregrine falcon could occur within the boundaries of the proposed XPA. However,
we know of no reports of these birds for the immediate area. It is possible that the
peregrine falcon could be present for brief periods during migration, and it is possible
that this species nests among the rimrock habitat which is widespread in the area.
The bald eagle could occur within the boundaries of the proposed XPA, especially for
brief periods during the winter months. Bald eagles wintering along the Colorado River
in western Colorado will frequently hunt in areas ecologically similar to the habitat found
within the proposed XPA, although their preferred habitat in this region is along the
riparian zone of the Colorado River.
Black-footed ferrets are unlikely to occur within the XPA, since there are no prairie dogs
or large populations of ground squirrels to provide suitable food source.
According to the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the greater sandhill crane (a State
designated endangered species) is seen on occasion approximately 20 miles south of
the proposed XPA near the Colorado River. Although this species could occur within the
XPA for brief periods during its migration, this seems unlikely because of the lack of
suitable sandhill crane habitat in the immediate area.
National Register of Historic Sites
There are no known districts, sites, buildings, structures, or objects in the XPA that
would be affected by exploration activities listed on, or eligible for fisting on, the National
Register of Historic Sites.
Cultural or Archeological Resources
Cultural Resource and Archeological Resource Surveys of the new access roads and
drill sites will be performed as soon as possible with results submitted to the DMG.
§2.02.7(1): Public Availability of Information
A complete copy of this Notice of Intent to Explore Involving the Removal of 250 Tons or
Less of Coal has been delivered to the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder's office, 544
Rood, Grand Junction, CO.
~J
