The species were the same as described for the oakbrush/mountain
shrub community. A narrow swale with an ephemeral drainage through the center of the
azea was dominated by sedges and spike rushes (Carex and Eleocharis species). The
aspen community along the fringes of the meadow was dominated by. the same
herbaceous species in the understory, but contained an open shrub layer and an overstory
RESULTS
Species of Special Concern: Literature and Database Listings
Tn the North Fork Coal Final Environmental Impact Statement (USDA, USDI, 2000) the
following species of special concern were identified in the general azea of the Sanborn
Creek Mine on BLM or private lands.
Common Name Scientific Name Status'
S fled bat Euderma maculatum SS
Townsend's bi -eared bat Co orhinus townsendii SS
Frin ed m otis M otis t sanoides SS
Bald ea le Haliaeetus ]eucoce halus T (delisted , ST
Southwest willow fl catcher Em idonax trailii extimus E,SE
Boreal toad B o boreas boreas C,SE
Status designations
E Listed endangered under the Endangered Species Act
T Listed threatened under the Endangered Species Act
C Listed candidate under the Endangered Species Act
SE Listed endangered in Colorado by the Colorado Division of Wildlife
ST Listed threatened in Colorado by the Colorado Division of Wildlife
SS BLM listed species of special concern
The FEIS concluded that no identified critical habitat for any state or federally listed
threatened or endangered species was identified within or near the study area (including
the Sanborn Creek Mine).
A Colorado Natural Heritage Program database search was conducted specifically for the
exploration hole..locations within the sections, townships, and ranges identified above in
order to identify species of special concern within or adjacent to the exploration drill sites
• (report included in Appendix).
