C~

July 9, 1993
Richard Fike
District Archaeologist
BLM, Montrose District
2465 S. Townsend
Montrose, CO 81401
MAC
Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc.
RE: ARCO Jumbo Mountain Drilling Program, Cultural Resource Inventories
Fieldwork Authorization N° 93UB029
Mr. Fike,
• Enclosed find three copies of a negative cultural resources inventory report for seven exploratory drill pad
locations for the 1993 Jumbo Mountain drilling program for ARCO/Mountain Coal's West Elk Mine. Two
of these drill pad locations (B and D) are slight modifications of previously surveyed locations. Proposed
access is mostly across private surface, but generally follows existing roads or previously surveyed
corridors. I completed this survey on June 29, accompanied by Glenn Miller and Alex Papp of ARCO
Coal and the private landowner. Approximately 8 acres was surveyed for these seven pad locations, plus
some informal reconnaissance of possible pad locations and alternate access routes that were aban-
doned. Survey conditions were gootl and surface visibility was adequate. The tew areas with marginal
visibility due to tangled thickets corresponded to slump areas with no intact soil surfaces. No cultural
resources were found and cultural resource clearance for this exploratory drilling program is recom-
mended.
If you have any questions or require any further materials, please do not hesitate to contact our office.
Sincerely,
arl Sp~th, Ph.D.
Senior Staff Archaeologist
xc: Desty Dyer, Bureau of Land Management, Montrose.
• Glenn Miller, ARCO Coal Company, Denver.
(303) 328-6244 (701) 258-1215
FAX: (303) 328-6245 t ~, P.O.
