Qb
• 5
ridge fingers and will require clearing of access corridors beyond currently
existing roads. Both of these locations are situated in areas of relatively
open stands of scrub oak and serviceberry with a sparse understory of forbs.
At both locations, stands of woody shrubs are thicker and taller along the
proposed access, but surface visibility is still good. Location JMB-7 is in
an open meadow area among aspen stands on a lower slope. There is some soil
accumulation at this location, perhaps 10-15 cm, but bedrock exposures were
also noted. Surface vegetation at this location is somewhat thicker than at
the other locations and the growth pattern of the forbs suggests prior surface
disturbance or intense overgrazing. Nonetheless, surface visibility was good.
For location JMB-3 an area approximately 70 to 100 feet in all
directions around the proposed drill site and a 50 foot wide corridor about
200 feet to the existing road was surveyed. Portions of the existing road
were confined by dense and overhanging vegetation and these segments were
inspected far evidence of cultural resources. Location JMB-5 is in a more
expansive area of open vegetation. An area approximately 300 feet east-west
by 200 feet north-south which appeared feasible for drilling activities was
inspected. In addition a corridor approximately 500 feet long from the
existing road to the drill location was inspected. Most of the access
corridor was densely overgrown with serviceberry and scrub oak, but was also
located on relatively steep descending slopes with low potential for cultural
resource sites. At location JMB-7 an area about 300 feet square encompassing
the level portions of the meadow around the proposed drill site was surveyed.
• In addition, spot inspections were made along the existing road at locations
which appeared promising for the location of cultural resources or appeared
likely to require minor improvements for access.
Results and Recommendations
No evidence of cultural resources was observed at any of the proposed
exploratory drilling locations or any of the new access corridors. Areas of
possible upgrading of existing roads showed little potential for cultural
resources and spot inspections of higher probability areas yielded no evidence
of cultural resources. This cultural resource survey yielded no evidence of
cultural resources, significant or nonsignificant, that might be adversely
impacted by the proposed undertaking. Cultural resource clearance for the
proposed undertaking is recommended.
•
