• Demonstration for Retention of Pond 008
1. BACKGROUND
Pond 008 was the second pond built for the New Horizon #2 Mine. As seen on Map
2.05.3(3)-1, the area draining to this pond has been reclaimed to final contour.
Approximately 40.6 acres flows into the pond. Ditches C-11, 12 and 13 also bring an
additional 62.3 acres into the pond, therefore the entire drainage area is 102.9 acres. These
three ditches are road ditches which will also remain after reclamation and have been
designed for the 100 year 24 hour event assuming disturbed acreage. Other than these 3
ditches, there are no reclaimed channels in the reclaimed area leading directly to the pond.
Since vegetation is now growing on most of the drainage area, the total volume of water and
sediment delivered to the pond has lessened. The pond is located on the Burbridge property
and three small ponds existed on the site prior to mining. The landowner has requested that
Pond 008 remain after reclamation to replace the three ponds that existed prior to mining.
• It is shown in this Attachment that the retention of Pond 008 meets all requirements of Rule
4.05.9(13). The post-mining use of the land around the pond is irrigated pasture. The pond
will be used as an erosion control pond by the landowner after reclamation.
2. WATER QUALITY
Pond 008 did not discharge from when it was constructed until June and July 2004,
then basically it did not discharge for 2005 other than December 2005, then off and on
through July 2006. All tests show that the water quality is very good. The discharge point
has been subject to NPDES requirements for many years and no problems with the
discharge exist. The water quality has and will continue to exceed all State and federal
requirements.
•
(Revised August2006) Attachment 2.05.3{3)-19-3
