Mayo and Associates, LC <br />• <br />~• <br />4 <br />The 3H content of Big Bear spring (14 to 17 TU) indicates appreciable contributions of <br />modern rechazge wafer, however, the relatively low'4C content (i.e., ~ 55 pmc) suggest <br />that the base flow component of Big Bear Spring contains older water. The 3H content of <br />Birch is appreciable less (< 0.5 TU) and the water has a14C age of 1,000 to 3,600 years. <br />Thus, Birch Spring dischazges from a groundwater system that is mostly ancient water <br />that mixes with a minor component of modem rechazge. The disparate groundwater ages <br />of the two spring waters indicate that groundwater systems in individual damage zones of <br />the Pleasant Valley Fault aze not in hydraulic communication with each other. <br />Groundwater collected from in mine wells in the Spring Canyon Member, which is <br />located above the Panther Member, had "C ages of 900 to 2,000 years and contained <br />essentially no 3H. Thus, theses waters are ancient and aze not in communication with Big <br />Bear Spring. The old component of Spring Canyon Member water is similar in age to the <br />old component of Birch Spring. However, hydrodynamic communication between the <br />Spring Canyon and Panther Members is unlikely, because the potentiometric surface of <br />the Spring Canyon Member is several hundred feet higher than the potentiometric surface <br />in the Panther Member (Mayo and Associates, 1999a). Additionally the Storrs Member, <br />which is located between the Spring Canyon and Panther Members, has an intermediate <br />potentiometric surface. <br />3.5 Skyline Mine (Wasatch Plateau, Utah) <br />Skyline Mine began coal mining in 1981. Coal has been mined from Mines 3, and 2. <br />Mine 2 was formerly known as Mine 1.
