STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OFNATURALRESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
DATE: October 22, 1987
T0: Gary Debus, Logan County Planner
FROM: John T. Doerfer, Reclamation Specialist
RE: Adequacy Items, File No. M-87-159
The following items must be addressed by the applicant in order to satisfy the
applicable requirements of C.R.S. 34-32-101 et sew and the Mineral Rules and
Regulations of the Mined Land Reclamation Board:
1. The seed mixture you have provided for re vegetation has been reviewed
and compared to Soil Conservation Service guidelines. The suggested
seeding rate based on the species identified for critical area
plantings (Colorado Agronomy tJote No. 61) is as follows:
Mix PLS @ 100% Weighted Proposed Suggested
Species (%) fibs/ac) (lbs/ac) (lbs/ac) (lbs/ac)
Western Wheatgrass 20 16 3.2 4.8 5
Blue Grama 55 3 1.7 0.3 2
Buffalograss 5 6 0.6 1.1 1
~6 ~3 ~: ~ ~
As can be seen by comparison, the proposed rate is somewhat deficient in
blue grams and the increased rate is suggested. In addition, a legume is
suggested for inclusion in the mixture. Cicer milkvetch at 1 lb/ac is
recommended, or alternately alfalfa, yellow sweetclover, or birdsfoot
trefoil at 0.5 lbs/ac. The legume will add a source of nitrogen, should
aide in grass establishment, and is suitable for the post-mining land
use. A commitment to the suggested seed mix, or substantiation for
contrived use of that proposed in the application, should be provided to
the Division.
2. The application states 3 to 4 inches of topsoil will be salvaged and 2 to
4 inches respread upon reclamation. Although this amount can be
considered as the minimum for approval, consideration should be given to
salvaging 6 inches if available. As success of revegetation is dependent
primarily on topsoil depth, the additional amounts of earthwork and
stockpile size required fora 6-inch depth are not considered excessive.
A response to this suggestion is requested.
3. The reclamation plan inc]udes mulching but the rate of mulching is not
specified. Is a rate of 2 tons/acre planned?
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel. (303) 866-3567
