Lamm
Governor
DATE: January 28, 1986
T0: Brad James
FROM: Karen Hellner
RE: WHITEWATER SANDSTONE QUARRY -FILE N0. M-86-002 - BLASTING PLANS
At the request of Jim McArdle, I reviewed the blasting plans submitted by Rudy
Fontanari for 110 permit application M-86-002. According to the blasting plan
outlined in their permit application, a peak particle velocity of .34 in/sec
and a peak overpressure of .02 psi(116dB) would be generated.
According to the U. S. Bureau of Mines publications No.'s 8485 and 8507,
published in 1981, the minimum safe level for peak particle velocity is .50
in/sec and that damage to a structure is not probable at less than 134 dB.
The blasting plan outlined by Rudy Fontanari meets the criteria stated above,
There are no structures within 800 feet of the proposed blast and the damage
potential at this distance is even less than stated above. I feel the
proposed blasting plan meets the minimum safe levels for blasting as outlined
by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. I only reviewed the blasting plans, not the
reasons the operator has for wanting to blast the quarry face.
/tmb
6920E
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
