Exhibit H -Wildlife Information (continued)
2 Si¢nificant wildlife resources on the affected lands
As pointed out in the wildlife evaluation of CDOW, the presence of water in the unnamed
drainage and the meadow below the mining operation allows diverse wildlife use. Many
species of birds can use the tree and shrub cover in the drainages and along the north berm.
Deer and elk also use the area as well as other small mammals such as those mentioned in the
species list of Appendix C. Bald eagles are also known to use the cottonwood trees along the
Eagle River from October through April, although no nests have been seen or identified
within I/4 mile of the proposed operation. Since the upper terrace (the area to be mined) has
not been irrigated for some years, its vegetative cover has suffered and does not provide much
forage for the animals although the vegetation is quite healthy around Spring Creek and the
unnamed drainage due to the presence of moisture.
• No amphibian use of the unnamed drainage was seen during any of the site investigations.
3. Seasonal use of the area
As previously stated, bald eagles use the cottonwood trees along the Eagle river from October
through April. Deer and elk use the site year round but more heavily in the winter and spring when
higher areas are covered with snow.
More birds also use the site and the lower meadow during the time that water exists, which
corresponds to the presence of irrigation flows in the unnamed drainage.
Year round, the area is used by non-game mammal species of wildlife that typically live in this
setting, i.e., voles, mice, skunks, raccoons, porcupines, rabbits and coyotes.
•
Carol Ann Pemut CDMG Application 4 7
