~~ <br />Fourteen soil sapplas wars taken Tram the area to ba disturbed by <br />• the Sanborn Creek Mine on November 2, 1990, and subjected to <br />chemical and physical analyses. Twalva o! the samples ware taken <br />from 4 pits which ware dug on the site for soil eamplinq (9 from <br />various horizons which wars distinctive in the pits, and 7 as <br />composites o! depths ieyths-pi.~ts), and 1 wara.takan from adjacent <br />areas to the pits (sae'~xhibiz s-010). <br />The arse o! most soil available !or'revegetation and plant growth <br />is a small alluvial plain formed under cliffs which rim the area. <br />The area is composed o! ltancos shale topped by various <br />thicknesses o! sandstone with small deposits o! granite and <br />gneiss, possibly washed in from higher terrain. The small <br />alluvial plain was occupied by several houses at one time. Other <br />leaser areas o! soil may be found in the area, but era so rock- <br />strewn that recovery of soil from them would not ba practical. <br />The soil horizons era thickest in the western most region of the <br />plain area, and grade to thinner in the eastern region (su table <br />1). In general, an average depth of soil in the pits is about 1 <br />Teat. <br />~ The soil is o! axcallsnt quality (tables 2 and 1), although the <br />fertility with respect to nitrogen and phosphorus is low. <br />Potassium and the micronutriants era present in sufficient <br />quantities to support adequate plant growth. Thera is soma <br />salinity present, but not in quantities so as to limit plant <br />growth. The sodium adsorption ratios era approximately the value <br />of 4.0 which would indicate a low sodium hazard in Chia soil. <br />pH's o! the soil era around neutrality, an inherent feature of <br />most soils of this altitude; this is a desireable value. The <br />organic matter content o! the soils is quits high which may ba <br />due to the abundance of coal in the immediate vicinity. <br />RECOIQSIIfDATZONS <br />r <br />The soil should be stockpiled from the alluvial plain area and <br />used !or ravegetation purposes as Headed. adjacent areas o! the <br />disturbed area are too rocky for proper revegatation use; <br />hovaver, theta should be sufficient soil in the alluvial area for <br />use. The horizons below the designated horizons era too rocky <br />!or use also. Tha soil overlies sandstone and Mancos shale. <br />J1n addition o! fertilizer may be helpful in establishing new <br />vegetative growth. Therefore, the following fertilizer additions <br />are recommended: <br />Phosphorus: 40 pounds per acre. This may be added as <br />0-45-0 (4S= phosphate, Calcium phosphate) at <br />the rata o! 90 pounds par acre. <br />• 2.04 - 67~ <br />
