X E6 - C ~ s~a3
82-Zyme-Rock outcrop complex, 12 to 65 percent elopes. Th s
complex consists of a shallow, well drained soil on moderately s eep to
steep hills and ridges, and Rock outcrops (Fig. 17). Elevation s 6,000 to
7,000 feet. The average annual precipitation is 14 to 18 inches. The
average annual air temperature is about 47 to 50 degrees F., and the average
frost-free season is 110 to 130 days.
The Zyme soil makes up approximately 50 percent of this uni and the
Rock outcrop makes up approximately 30 percent of the unit. The Zyme soil
formed in residual material from shale.
Included in this unit is about 15 percent Bodot clay, 5 per ent Arboles
silty clay loam and small areas of Dulce sandy loam and Travessi la sandy
loam and soils that are lighter in texture than typical of the Z e series.
Typically, the surface layer of the Zyme soil is grayish br wn clay
loam about 4 inches thick. The underlying material is grayish b own heavy
clay loam that overlies soft shale at a depth of 10 inches. Dep h to
bedrock ranges from 6 to 20 inches.
Permeability is slow. Effective rooting depth is 6 to 20 1 ches due to
soft bedrock. Available water capacity is low. Surface runoff s rapid and
the hazard of water erosion is high.
Rock outcrop consists of bare exposures of sandstone and sh~le.
This soil is used primarily for livestock grazing and wildl fe
habitat.
Fig. 17 -- Landscape of Zyme-Rock outcrop complex, 12 to 65 pert nt slopes.
The Zyme soil produces stands of pinyon and juniper trees, shrub and
grasses. Rock outcrop is essentially bare of vegetation.
