In irrigated areas, the primary concerns of management are
controlling
erosion by water, maintaining [he organic matter content and fe tili[y of
the surface layer, and proper use of irrigation water. Incorpo sting crop
residues into the surface will improve water infiltration, tilt help
prevent soil erosion, and help maintain adequate or,¢anic matter levels in
the surface layer.. Realignment of ditches and irrigation strucdures are
needed in some areas for a more uniform distribution of irrigation water.
Irrigation methods suitable for this soil are furrows, cur ugations,
and sprii,4lers. Furrow irrigation is best suited to row crops. Furrows
should run across [he slope. Sprinkler irrigation is well suit d to most
crops. Use of this method permits the even, controlled application of
water, reduces runoff, and minimizes the risk of erosion. Corr gations are
suitable for alfalfa, pasture, and small grains. Regardless of [he
irrigation method used, water must be applied carefully to prev nt runoff
and control erosion.
Returning all crop residue [o [he soil and using a cropping system [ha[
includes grasses, legumes, or grass-legume mixtures help [o mai rain
fertility and tilth. The use of commercial fertilizers helps m intain soil
fertility. Grain and grasses respond to nitrogen fertilizer and legumes
respond to phosphorus.
In nonirrigated cropland areas, management is needed to conserve
moisture, control soil erosion, and to maintain productivity of the soil.
Stubble mulch tillage, and incorporating crop residues in and on the surface
are essential to reduce runoff and erosion and [o conserve moist re.
Chiseling or subsoiling are effective in breaking up tillage pans and
Smproving water penetration. Tillage operations should be kept to a
minimum. Diversions and greased waterways may be needed. They help prevent
gully erosion.
