Colorado F0203
Plarch 4, 1980
Alan Salter
General Manager
};ing Cnal Mine
4424 Countv Road 120
Hesperus, CO 81326
Dear Mr. Salter:
This office received your correspondence of February 21, 1980,
requesting a 1) statement for the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Eoard concerning the cultural-historical impact of the King Coal Mine.
operation, as well as 2) information for the proposed federal lease.
We conducted a file search of the Colorado Archaeological Site
~ventory and the Colorado Inventory of Historic Sites, as well as
mina ions pending or on the National Register of Historic Places,
for Township 35N, Range 11W, and Sections 21 and 32, which would in-
clude the boundaries for the mine bench, the current federal coal
lease, and the application for coal lease.
There are no known Archaeological or Historical/Architectural
resources in the impact area of the proposed undertaking.
Based on the information supplied in your correspondence, it
appears that there would no no further impact to cultural resources
due to the seriously disturbed nature of .the terrain in the 8.36 arses
of the mine-bench area.
However, despite the fact that there will be no surface disturb-
ances in the proposed coal lease area, these mining operations will
possibly create an indirect impact on potentially eligible cultural
resources due to the potential for vandalism on cultural resources.
There is always the possibility that unidentified Cultural Resources
exist within this area. Therefore, a professional survey should be
conducted to Identify any Eliy, ible Cultural Resources in the proposed
project area.
As you know, the ultimate responsibility for compliance with the
~~ational 3istoric Preservation Act, as implemented in 36 CFR 800,
•ains with the federal agency and cannot be delegated by it.
