The Al horizon is 6 to 20
inches thick and is thinnest in areas that were
once cultivated.
Blakeland sandy loam, I to 15 percent slopes
(B1E).--this undulating to rolling soil occurs on
uplands in the northern part of the Area. 'bst
mapped areas are less than 160 acres in si:.e,
Included with this soil in mapping are small
areas of Truckton sandy loam, 3 to 8 p~~. cent slopes,
Bresser sandy loam, 3 to 9 percent slopes, and
Stapleton loamy sand. Also included are areas of
Sandy alluvial land in drainage.+ays.
Surface runoff is slow to medium, depending on
slope. This soil is subject to severe soil blowing
if it is tilled or cover is inadequate. The hazard
of ~.~a ter erosion is slight to moderate. Gullies
fon on the steeper parts of drainagci:ays.
F1ost areas of this soil are in native grass and
arc used for grazing livestock. Some areas have
been cultivated in the past, but most of these areas
h avc been seeded wich grass. I~ildlife habitat
occurs in places. (Capability unit l'i e-3; Sandy
foothill range site)
BlaL.e land-Orsa association (1 to 4 percent slopes)
(Bo).--7'h ese gently sloping soils are on foot
slopes and alluvial fans in the northern part of the
.4 re a. Flapped areas are long, irregular in shop c,
and more than 20 acres in si_e.
6lakeland soils make up abouc 50 percent of the
acreage. They arc mostly on shall ridges and L:nolls.
Orsa soils make up about 35 percent of the acreage
and are mostly on foot slopes and in shallow
sw ales.
Included with these soils in mapping are small
areas of Bresser sandy loam, 1 to 3 percent slopes,
Kassler gravelly sandy loam, and Sandy alluvial
land. Also included are small areas of a soil that
is more red than, but otherwise similar to, Blake-
land soils.
Runoff is slow to medium. In cultivated areas
the erosion hazard is slight to moderate and some
gullies have formed. These soils receive runoff
from soils at higher elevation.
Dbst of the acreage is in native grass. A few
small areas are used for dryfatmed grain or irriga-
ted alfalfa. (Capability unit 11'e-5, dryland; IVs-1
irrigated; Sandy Foothill range site)
Bresser Series
The Bresser series consists of well-drained soils
[hat formed in sandy soil material deposited b}•
wind and kate r. These gently sloping [o moderately
steep soils are on terraces and uplands in the
warmer, northern part of the Area. Slopes are 1 to
15 percent. The vegetation is mid and tall grasses.
Elevations are 5,500 to 6,600 feet. Annual precipi-
tation is 15 to 19 inches. Fte an annual soil tem-
pcraturc is !7° to 62° F., and the frost-free sea-
son is 1:0 to 135 days.
[n a representative profile the surface Layer,
about 5 inches thick, is grayish-brown sandy loam.
The subsoil, about 25 inches tliicl, is dark gra}'ish-
bro~;n sandy loam and light alive-brown and brown
sandy clay loam. The undo r]ying material is light
EXHIBIT "D" - Wildlife, Water
Resources, Vegetation and Soil Information 7
Page 5
