DANIELSON, DEPUTY STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: IG4UFFMAN PIT,LARIMER COUNTY
As requested by your office, we have reviewed a December 12, 1978 letter
from Great Western Sugar concerning the Kauffman Pit near Loveland. Great
Western expressed Concern over potential water quality problems, potential
instability of the settling pond dike, and potential public access problems.
We cannot address the potential for pollution of the gravel pit lakes as this
is a question which must be addressed by the Water Quality Control Division.
The third concern--public access and wildlife--should be addressed by your
Board and the Division of Wildlife.
The information included in Great Western's letter was insufficient to evaluate
the actual stability of the settling pond dike. The shallow, 10-foot depth and
3:1 slopes of the northernmost pit and the property line setback shown on the
reclamation map should prevent any such instability. Kauffman, however,
should provide engineering data to confirm this estimate of the dike prior to
the issuance of the permit.
JAD/SSH:mvf
eris A.
