Waldron
Division Of Minerals And Geology
1313 Sherman St, Roont 215
Denver CO 80203
j
RE: Bowie No.2 Mine (Permit No. C-9G-083), Ncw Permit Application
Dear Mr. Waldron,
The Division of Wildlife submitted a wildlife statctncnt to the applicant on December 21, 1995. At that
time we listed our concerns and some suggestions for mitigation of impacts to the wildlife resource. T1tc
DOW's letter was included in the permit application and those concerns and conuncnts, for the moll part,
have been addressed to our satisfactiat. Additionally we would like to suggest that during reclamation
some large rocks and rock piles be placed randomly tluoughoul the reclaimed area in order Io provide
hiding cover, shade, etc. for small wildlife until the vegetation grows back.
There is still one concern which remains. In our assessment we slated that the proposed conveyor belt
may block cast-west movement of big game animals in this heavily used winter range. Our suggested
mitigation for this problem was to place over/under passes along the length of the conveyor bch, "not
further than I/4 mile apart," in order to allow the animals to nwve through lltc area.
Upon review of the permit application we have noted that the length of the conveyor belt from the
vicinity of the portal facility to the tnlck loading facility is approximately 2800 feet dropping in elevation
approximately 575 feel. In the permit application it is stated, in section 2.05.6, that the longest length
between overpasses is 1650 feet. One overpass, in conjunction with the new access road, crosses the
conveyor belt just below the portal and work facilities. This overpass may be ofminimal use to wildlile
due to the location on the hillside and the topography to the west of the conveyor belt at that location.
The plans show the conveyor belt to be continuous until it gels to within I5o yards or• the truck loading
facility where it then is elevated and would allow wildlife movements under the conveyor belt. "1'Itese
crossings may not be sufficient to allow big game animals to continue the natural cast-west migration and
movement along the mountain side.
We have met with and discussed this issue with Mr. Basil Bear, manager of Bowie No.1 mine. We arc
• willing to try the planned configuration at this tintc but would like to state that if blockage of cast-west
UIPAN IAILN y l if NATURAL H I:M II iRfLS land s Levlihoa, Laamaee lbttln
N'ILIII.IFE f:Ohlhl LlAIUN, AmnM Glen. f'hannal • Xda<a 1. liaul • hlvl LcCalley
Lrvm P Nw0 • Y.o' lo.¢ IanR>Inn Nny1 L • 6'illinn X I Iplvp • Inlni bmlp • lane Lnny
