Background Descri tion
' 1. Topography
The topography of the Logan Wash area is shown in Figure 5 and consists of
long, finyer-like, level benches bowided by uniformly steep (70 to 90't~) slopes.
' Drainages have rvorked headward, dissectiny Tertiary formotions, into the
southernmost remnants of the northward-retreating Roan Cliffs. The resulting
slopes include all directions of exposure. The area has a togogra, hic relief
' Hf about 4000 feet, ranging from 4390 feet along the Colorado River to F951
feeC at the high HHint on the plateau. On the Logan Wash site itself, the
elevation ranges approximately from 6000 feet to 3600 feet. Drainage bottoms
contain alluvium, and talus lies against the base of the slopes. The talus
' is typically no steeper than about 37 degrees.
' 2. Industry
There is no industry on or near the Logan 4Jash site other than the Occidental
In~oject itself. The nearest towns to the site, DeBeque and Grand Valley> also
' contain no industry. These towns are described in more dcCail belo~,+.
3. hyriculture
' The only agricultural activity on the Logan Wash site is a limited amount of
cattle grazing in the sun~,mer.
t Er.tensive background information has been obtained in the flora present nn the
site. One hundred eighty-`our species of vascular plants were recorded Hn the
Logan 'dash property. These include 7 trees, 25 shrubs, 16 grasses, 134 fortis,
' and 2 succulents. Plinety-one percent of the plant species are native to the
site. There are ten vegetation conrnrunities on and near the site. The vege*_ation
is typica', of the Roan Cliffs.
'
Raw shale re~noved from the retorts is deposited upon the surface and :rill he
reclaimed in accordance with the requirements of the Mined Land Reclamation
Board. That Beard approved a life-of-the-n•ine permit for the Loyan l•Jash operation
' on htarch 2, 197;. Spent shale is not brought to the surface and does r,ot need
to he vegetated.
' Detailed information concerning topography, water, wildlife, soils and vegetation
~•+as submitted to Lhe Mined Land Reclamation !;Hard; must of that inforr.mtion is
summarized in this Exhibit 4 or elsewhere in the application to which this Exhibit
' is attached.
4.
