•
Phase 1 is approximately 17,2 acres in size, and consists of the eastern half of the project site, and
Phase 11 is approximately 15.3 acres in size, and consists of the western half of the site. During
sand and gravel mining, approximately 5 acres will be mined at any one time.
Overburden soils will be removed and stockpiled adjacent to the excavated area, or used as
backfill material for the previous mining area. The sand and gravel will be mined using
trackhoes, front-end loaders, and bulldozers. Processing [he sand and gavel will consist of
screens and crushers located neaz the center of the project area. Once the materials are processed,
they will be stockpiled onsite or loaded into trucks and trucked offsite. After all the sand and
gravel has been removed, the area will be backfilled and compacted using the stockpiled
overburden material, the overburden from the next mining area, and imported fill materials. The
area will be 6ackfilted to the approximate original site grades.
()7 Nature, depth, and thickness oj[he deposit to be mined and the thickness and type ofoverburden to be
removed; and Nature oj[he stratum immedralely beneath the maters! to be mined in sedimentary
deposits.
Overburden material within the project site is approximately 12 feet deep. According to the US
Department of Agriculture, Department of Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), the
overburden soil consists of a silty clay loam that is not suited for cultivation due to high salinity
levels. Vegetation on the project site consists of tamerisk, greasewood, and halogeton. These
plants are listed on the State of Colorado's noxious weed list. There is no topsoil on the project
site that is suitable for plant growth medium. Therefore, no special provisions will be made to
separate "topsoil" materials from the remaining overburden soil.
A 10-ft to 20-ft lens of sand ,gravel and cobble material is located under the overburden material
described above. This is the material that will be extracted and processed. (n general, the upper
portion of this lens contains more fine-grained sand material. Cobbles within the lens are
anticipated to range in size upto sixteen inches in diameter.
Below the sand and gravel lens is a weathered silty clay Mancos Shale, which is considered to be
bedrock in this portion of Mesa County. Mancos Shale is a dark gray to gray block, thin-bedded
to laminated shale with interbeds of siltstone and sandstone.
(g) Identify the primary and secondary commodities to be mined/eztracted and describe the intended use;
and
The primary and secondary commodities are sand and gravel which will be used for construction
materials. The overburden soils will be used, along with imported materials, for backfill on the
project site.
(h) Name and describe the intended use of all ezpected incidental products to be mined/extracted 6y the
proposed operation.
No incidental products will be mined, processed, or extracted .
