iii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii •
RECEIVED
Sept. 5, 1990
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division SEP 7 1990
Board of Review
1313 S:nerman Street, Room 215 Mined Land
Denver, Colorado 80203 Reclamation Division
RE: Virginia Acres Gravel Pit, M-90-021 (Sept. Hearing)
Letter of Objection due date 9/10/90
Gentlemen:
Please consider this submission as an objection to the
Virigi:na Acres Gravel Pit application by United Companies
for a reclamation plan at 30 Road and the Colorado River in
Section 20, T 1 N and Range l E (Ute Meridian).
This presentation consists of two major parts: written
objections on specific issues and a graphic presentation
with visual data to support our objections. A list of
sources for data presented is included.
I:n addition to this submission, your office should have
in the Virginia Acres review file a series of photographs
and dr;swings we submitted in April at the first hearing.
The dr.swings show the river channel changes that occurred in
the 1983-84 high water flow period where the Colorado River
moved 1400 feet north of the pre-1983 channel about '~ mile
west of the proposed gravel pit. We anticipate such changes
are likely to happen again if a gravel pit is excavated in
the proposed area.
I:n the public notice of the hearing printed in the
Grand ,Junction Daily Sentinel, 7/30,8/6, 13, ~ 8/20, by
United Companies, they state "The future use of the land
will b~=_ a public park to be used for recreation." This in
our opinion is a blatent political ploy on the part of
United Companies to obtain approval of the pit, the same
technique they used in the local hearings to receive a
gravel permit from the county contingent on approval by your
Division. It is totally irrelevant and should not have been
includ=_d in the public announcement.
Rather than each concerned party write a series of
lengthy objections, we had decided to have this entry that
represents the views of four families whose names and
addresses are listed on this letter. Please remember this
represents four objections, not one.
When the hearing has been completed we would like to
learn the decision promptly. If for any reason our
presentation is to be thrown out after the hearing we would
like it to be returned and we will pay the postage.
For purposes of the record, please note that United
Companies did not place on public file in the Mesa County
