<br /> <br />Mr. Darry Ferguson -6- February 18, 1993 <br />5. The Division believes more baseline monitoring is required <br />at this site. As indicated earlier, five of the holes had <br />water in them during drilling. All five should be cased and <br />completed in the zones of interest and additional wells <br />added. These locations should be outside of the proposed <br />pit area. Baseline adequacy consists of monthly monitoring <br />of field parameters (pH, conductivity, temperature and water <br />level) and semi-annual full-suite monitoring for a year. <br />6. We have one sample analysis for the proposed well 82-5, <br />which was acquired November 1, 1982. It produces a <br />moderately alkaline, very hard and saline (TDS = 840 mg/1), <br />(Ca, Mg)(HCO3, SO4) water. Driller's logs indicated that <br />there was a significant hydrogen sulfide smell associated <br />with the well that did not appear to manifest itself in <br />these results. <br />7. We are aware that there was a negative alluvial valley floor <br />determination at the site. However, we believe that some <br />alluvial monitoring wells would be appropriate. The permit <br />indicates that dryland farming is being done on the top of <br />the mesas. <br />Geolocrv <br />1. Geochemistry data is provided in the first tables of Section <br />2.04. Information from three holes appears to have been <br />tabulated: 82-4, 82-5, and some additional hole. Please <br />indicate the source of the third set of data and make sure <br />is marked on a map. <br />2. The geochemical information is derived from composite <br />samples ranging from 3' in thickness to 105' in thickness, <br />but averaging 30'-40'. The Division finds this sampling <br />interval unacceptable, as the standard sampling interval is <br />4'. Please review the enclosed "Guidelines for the <br />Collection of Baseline Water Quality and Overburden <br />Geochemistry Data°, and prepare a plan to acquire additional <br />information from three locations widely spread across the <br />proposed pit area, in response to Rule 2.04.6(2)(b)(i)(D). <br />Describe the sampling methodology, sample preparation, and <br />analytical testing methodology. Please add two parameters <br />to the list found on Table 3: neutralization potential and <br />acid-base potential. Submit the results to the Division as <br />soon as possible. <br />3. In Section 2.04.6, please describe the character of the <br />slumping contact between the middle terrace gravel and the <br />Cretaceous sediments identified on the Geology Map (4-2). <br />Describe the material and the local ground water system and <br />their interaction.
