~ ~'

GRAND Ii~SP. COAL COMPANY
• REFUSE AREA STABILITY ANALYSIS
IIdTP,ODUCTION
We have made this study to analvze the stability of the
refuse disposal area located at the site of the Grand Mesa
Coal Company coal mine which is located about 3~; miles north-
west of Cedaredge, Colorado near Colby as shown in Figure 1
of this report.
SCOPE
On Iday 28, 1980, Mr. Larry t1. Reschke of the Grand Mesa
Coal Company provided, for our use, five bull: samples of soils
taken from the refuse disposal area of the aforementioned
mine site. These bulk samples consisted of two unweathered
• refuse samples, two overburden soil samples, and one sample
of r:eathered refuse. Also provided for our use at that time
was a blueprint of several cross-sections of the refuse disrosal
area and a copy of a map entitled Affected Land P1ap which is a
contoured air photo of the mine site area and refuse disposal
area shooTinQ the locations of the refuse disposal area cross-
sections.
To analyze the stability of the refuse disrosal area,
several laboratory tests of the bulk samnles were made to
determine some of the index and eneineering properties neces-
sary for the stability calcultions. The analysis calculations
were made using a computerized Bishop Method of Slices based
on a refuse disposal area cross-section o~hich was the least
stable of the cross-sections provided for our use.
-1-
•
