affected by room and pillar mining with or without retreat
mining. In order for the Point Lookout Sandstone to be affected,
additional stresses on pillars or pillar remnants would have to
exceed the shear stresses of the floor material and result in
floor heave. It is extremely unlikely that this would occur in a
competent sandstone formation at such a shallow depth. Also,
there are no known water wells or other uses in the Point Lookout
Sandstone. It is therefore proposed that no monitoring be
performed of the Point Lookout Sandstone.
Other than the wells in creek alluvium, all known wells of the
area are located in the Cliff House Sandstone. This includes the
Fiederspiel - Yeager well and the Messier well. There is a chance
that the Messier well could be affected, therefore, it is
proposed that this well be monitored for field parameters monthly
and a full suite analysis on a semi-annual 'oasis.
The Menefee Formation does not contain any significant water. The
water in the logs is due to the fact that water was used in
drilling and the formation is relatively impermeable. A well was
installed in the Coai Gulch alluvium by Peerless Resources in the
lowest portion of the Menefee at the southern end of the permit
area. This well can be used to monitor the water in the Menefee
Formation. It is proposed that this well also be monitored in the
same manner as the Messier well.
Also, the Mangrum weal, located in Coal Gulch alluvium
approximately 2000 feet southeast of the permit area, can also be
used to monitor water quality and flow. It is proposed that this
well also be monitored for field parameters mcnthly and a full
suite analysis on a semi-annual basis.
Regarding surface water data, full suits ana~yses for Cherry
Creek, Lightner Creek, and Coal Gulch above and below the
minesite are included on page 97 of the app'ication. All
drainages except Lightner Creek flow only in response to spring
thaw and strong thunderstorms. The age of the data should not
affect the validity of it. There have been no significant changes
to the watersheds of any of the drainages and development has not
cccurred on any scale whtich would affect surface water samples.
Also, ! fail to see how the questions ^aised in the August 3
letter fat' under the category of completeness. it seems that
