The analysis list for the four Phase II sample sites will include pH, EC, saturation
percent, acid base potential, iron, manganese, nitrate, and particle size. Sulfur
fractionation (i.e., pyritic, sulfate, and organic) analyses will only be performed when
potential acidity exceeds the neutralization potential. The list includes all Phase I
parameters which had values that exceeded unsuitable levels or had maximum concentration
greater than 50 percent of the threshold value. Total combustible solids, an indicator of
the fire hazard potential, will not be analyzed on Phase II samples since carbonaceous
overburden materials, other than the Lennox coal seam, are not present at Yoast. No
mercury or arsenic analyses are warranted at Yoast due to the extremely remote chances of
any potential mercury or arsenic toxicity. There have been no documented cases of arsenic
or mercury toxicity to plants or to animals under normal conditions (MUnshower, 1983).
Mercury and arsenic toxicity is limited to industrial or agricultural situations where
mercuric or arsenic fungicides or other contaminants are used (Barrett et al., 1980).
Nitrate analyses will be completed on the Phase II samples because elevated levels have
been previousl in overburden samples from the Seneca I I and II-W mine areas. ~.
/f~ Manganese a d iron lyres are recommended to confirm or deny the drill stem ,
lJ 1 contamination hypothesis.
Laboratory Methods
The parameter/procedure list to be used for the Phase II samples collected from the Yoast
study area is listed in Table 2.
Cited Literature
American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM). 1960.
