Dept. of Natiral Resources
Attn: Ms. Carol Russell
RE: Vento Seam Extraction, Newlin Creek-Dorchester Boundary
File No: 79-39
Dear Carol:
On December 16, 1981, Dorchester Coal received approval from
your office to allow barrier pillar removal procedures to be
initiated by Newlin Creek Mining along the boundary common to
both operations. Newlin Creek is currently in the retreat
phase of their operations along the boundary and in so doing
will be removing coal from the Dorchester side of the boundary
under a contractual agreement with Dorchester. It appears
that these activities would fall under the December approval.
If that is the case, please consider this material as merely
supplemental to the December revision. If not, consider this
letter and enclosed maps to be a formal request for a minor
revision to the Dorchester #1 permit. Because of the timing
of the Newlin Creek activities it is essential that an approval
be forthcoming as quickly as possible to ensure maximum
resource recovery.
The enclosed map, Exhibit A, depicts the areas to be mined
by Newlin Creek under the agreement. Newlin Creek will
simply use an extension of their currently approved room and
pillar mining technique to extract coal in the Vento Seam as
shown on exhibit A. The total area to be mined underground
will be approximately 4.17 acres. Additional surface distur-
bance due to subsidence will be minimal if any. While we
anticipate extraction from all five areas shown on the map,
areas "B" and "E" may have recovery restricted by faulting
or proximity to old workings. The final determination will
be based upon safety and economic factors as the mine progresses.
Information pertaining to the overall geology of the area is
included in the Dorchester #1 and Newlin Creek applications.
As you know.
