Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist
Division of Minerals & Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Rm. 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Re: Lorencito Canyon Mine (Permit No. C-96-084)
Dear Mr. Gorham:
This office has reviewed the information submitted with your
correspondence of January 2, 1997 concerning the above new mine
permit.
The overview by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants does an
excellent job in summarizing the cultural resource work that has
been done and is being proposed for this mine. We look forward to
receiving the inventory report due out at the end of January 1997
which deals with the work completed last year.
Construction for each phase of the mine plan should not commence
until the following has been completed per the Advisory Council
regulations, 36 CFR 800.
1. Identification of the cultural resources in the areas of
potential effect.
2. Evaluation of each site in terms of the National Register
criteria.
3. Avoidance or testing and/or data recovery has been
completed on the potentially eligible and eligible sites.
Since this will be a multi phase project extending over several
years, we suggest that an agreement document be developed between
our office, the Office of Surface Mining and the Advisory Council
with the Division of Minerals & Geology and the project proponent
being concurring parties. This document would outline the steps
that each party would follow during the life of this project.
