J. Coors
analyzed the roof, interburden and floor from three drill holes for
geochemical parameters. I compared the suggested chemical parameters
contained in Table 3 of the Guidelines for the Collection of Baseline
Water Quality and Overburden Geochemistry Data, September 16, 1982,
with the list that Coors had analyzed. The list was complete except
for Cadmium and Copper.
According to the justification in the referenced guidelines, trace
elements Cadmium and Copper are included because "concentrations may
increase in waters near surface mines in western U.S. ..... may be a
pollutant associated with fly ash disposal". It appears neither of
these justifications are applicable to the Bowie No. 2 Mine.
Therefore, please consider waiving the requirement to sample the roof
interburden and floor for Cadmium and Copper. Acid base and
neutralization potential were not determined because they are not
included on the list of chemical parameters contained in Table 3.
The proposed Bowie No. 2 Mine will initially be mined in the D-Seam.
The Bowie No. 1 Mine is also in the D-Seam. Coors did not analyze the
coal seam for chemical parameters. I could not find an analysis of
the D-Seam in the Bowie No. 1 Mine permit. Please consider allowing
us to sample the D-Seam coal in the adjacent Bowie No. 1 Mine and use
that information in the permit application for the Bowie No. 2 dine.
The active Bowie No. 1 Mine is three to four miles from the proposed
Bowie No. 2 Mine workings.
Enclosed is a summary of the geochemical work performed by Coors.
Please call if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Jimm Sto~.
Consulting Engineer
cc: Wm. A. Bear, Jr.
