To our knowledge there are no T & E species occuring on the
mine property. Bald Eagles are found on the Animas River, within
one mile of the property, during the winter months. The mine
property does not provide any nesting site that we know of, nor any
wi.nt.er roosting trees. fie pending upon the route of the haul trucla
• and frequency of trips 1 doubt that the birds would be disturbed,
as this stretch of the Animas R. has two major highways paralle.Ling
both sides.
The one comment I would like to address is the continued support of
the Company toward the reclamation of the property. The entire
area surrounding Durango provides critical winter habitat for both
deer and ells. Reclamation should provide native browse species as
well as treed cover for these two primary sper, ies o£ concern. Deer
numbers are dwindling in the area, we believe, due to the loss of
habitat and the competiCion with increasing eLk numbers.
If I can be of further help, please call 3G3-2~(7-0855.
S' cerely Ls~~
C~
Ruth Lewis Carlson
Habitat, Biologist
cc:Hendicks
.
