The stretch of Big Salt Wash below Ruby Lee and above Highline
canal appears more intermittent than perennial. Stock tanks in the
area intercept much of runoff near the stream. Below Highline
Canal, return flows of irrigation water create a sustained flow in
Big Salt Wash again. I do not know how much, if any, of this water
is taken out of the wash and used again but, this is more than l0
miles downstream from the mine. The only impact the mine could
have would be due to sediment pond discharges (which have not
occurred for several years) which would have to flow down Dry Gulch
for three miles before entering Big Salt Wash and flowing another
7 or 8 miles to get past the Highline Canal. If there is a storm
big enough to create that amount of pond discharge, impacts from
the reclaimed mine site would be impossible to detect amidst the
other damages from the storm runoff.
c:\wp51\1r918
