Baldrige
Mined Land Reclamation Division
423 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203
Dear Ms. Baldrige:
Thanks for sending the updated Senica II-W mine permit application. I don't have
any major problems with the application. However, I do question their ability to
re-establish any aspen starting with a density of 250 stems/acre. I think the
aspen groups as a reclamation goal will be very beneficial to wildlife and a final
density of 250 stems/acre of mature trees is acceptable. It is my understanding
from meetings with U.S.D.A., A.R.S. personnel that initial plantings will have to
be substantially higher. Some consideration will also have to be given to protection
of these plantings until they can no longer be eliminated by wildlife prior to be-
coming established. I support their plans to use live topsoiling.
Monitoring plans should include keeping records on big game-vehicle collisions with
a commitment to insure these to not become excessive. I support the annual aerial
census and suggest that Senica personnel coordinate this with CDOW.
I also have a concern about the ability of CDOW to adequately manage big game in
this area if some harvest is not allowed. I would strongly encourage Senica per-
sonnel to work with CDOW to provide some access onto and through their property
during big game seasons.
We are anxious to work with them to resolve these concerns and to offer any
assistance they may need.
Sincerely,
im Morris
Wildlife Biologist
JM:ch
cc: Haskins, Lockhart, Whitaker, Grand Pre, File
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, David H.
