(303) 866-3567
June 3, 1982
TO: Jim Herron and Fred Banta
FROM: Jerzy Zimpfer ~ 1,
~~
iiiiiiiuiiiiiiiiii
999
David C. Shelton
Director
RE: Determination of the Presence of an Alluvial Valley Floor in the
Vicinity of Cottonwood and Rapid Creeks
I have completed reviewing the alluvial valley floor (AVF) report for Cottonwood
and Rapid Cz~eeks, as revised June 1, 1982. The report provided by the applicant
includes sorry of the Level I (reconnaissance level) information necessary for
the identification of alluvial valley floors. However, additional information
should be submitted to allow the Division to make a more precise identification
of alluvial valley floors and to complete the required alluvial valley floor
determination. The following issues should be addressed by the applicant:
1) The AVF study area appears insufficient to make the required determinations
for all arezrs in or adjacent to the permit area. The report provided concerns
potential alluvial valley floors in the vicinity of Cotoowood and Rapid Creeks.
This is only a portion of the area in or adjacent to the proposed permit area.
It does not include the Colorado River or other tributaries to the Colorado
which drain the proposed permit area. If the other tributaries contain no
unconsolidated streamlaid depoiits, it would be proper to exclude them, but the
report conterins no information to that effect. AVF information on the Colorado
River Valley should be provided to a point 1/2 mile below the confluence of the
lowest tributary draining the proposed permit area.
2) The report does not include a map of all unconsolidated streamlaid deposits
in or adjacent to the permit area. Plate 1 shows several terrace deposits
(A, B, C and D) and a narrow band of streamlaid deposits located along Rapid Creek.
The report does not include mapping of unconsolidated streamlaid deposits located
along the Colorado River, and apparently does not include all terrace deposits
located along Rapid Creek or the Colorado River. (The definition of unconsolidated
streamlaid deposits includes both floodplain and terrace deposits.) A map should
be prepared to identify all unconsolidated streamlaid deposits in or adjacent to
the permit area. (As an option, the Division could map the extent of uncon-
solidated streamlaid deposits through field inspection and the use of our air
photography..)
