Fuels Corporation at their on-going operations show
very steep hydraulic gradients, averaging 500 ft,/mi in
rocks overlying the Wadge coal, and very lox permea-
bility, Infloxs to their active pits is minimal, most
of which is used for dust control. Assuming underflows
in the alluvium underlying Foidel Creek near Energy
Fuels Pit 41 to be less than 50 gal/min, annual re-
charge to the ground-water system in this watershed
would be about one percent of precipitation. On that
basis, total ground-xater recharge on all three lease
areas would be about 50 acre-feet per year.
Confined conditions occur in sandstone beds that under-
lie the Wadge coal bed so that wells drilled at lower
elevations near the base of the dipslope surfaces com-
monly flow. Yields seldom exceed 10 gal/min and dimin-
ish within months to less than half the initial flow.
Alluvium and terrace deposits are thin within the pro-
posed lease tracts and are not regarded as potential
aquifers.
Water quality ranges widely from one well to another,
but in general shallow wells yield water that is
moderately hard with calcium and bicarbonate being the
dominant ions. Dissolved solids concentrations
generally average 500 to 1,000 mg/1 (milligrams per
40
