Ltr/Revw Bsln Env Data - 7 - July 2, 1986
(A). Garve Canyon. The response on channel dimensions and AVF
potentia o t e ower portion of Garvey Canyon is adequate.
(B). Little Salt Wash. The information provided on sub-irrigation
and water avai a r ,ty in the Little Salt Wash basin is adequate.
(C ). Coal Gulch. The discussion on the feasibility of storing water
from ephemer~streamflow in reservoirs is adequate. The data
presented on Coal Gulch flood flows is subject to interpretation.
These peak flows were not "recorded" but rather estimated (see
discussion under Surface Water Information, item l.c.). The statement
that snowmelt runoff is apparently inconsequential in the Coal Gulch
drainage can not be substantiated without further study (see item
l.a.). The description of water storage along Big Salt Wash is
adequate.
(D). Big Salt Wash. The information provided in the response to
this commentis e~equate. However, the regional practices definition
which uses a criteria of a minimum valley width of 800 ft. as part of
the definition may be too restrictive. Areas that are narrower than
800 ft. in width may be potentially irrigable if they approach or meet
the other regional practices criteria. A strict interpretation of this
criteria may exempt areas that, upon further inspection, may indeed be
classified as a potential AVF. For the purposes of determining the
adequacy of baseline data for AYFs, however, the information provided
in the adequacy review responses can be considered adequate.
Soils Resource Information 2.04.9
(A). A generalized (Order 3) soil survey was presented for the
47,000 acres of the "Fruits Mines Study Area" by James P. Walsh &
Associates, Inc., in a report dated november 1, 1983. This report
provides a good starting point for identifying soil resources at this
site. However, it should be stressed that more intensive soil sampling
(e. g., Order 2 survey) similar to what is presented in the November 15,
1983 report by Walsh & Associates would be required if any additional
lands would be disturbed (i.c., areas exceeding the already addressed
6,700 acres in the November 15, 1983 report).
(B). Footnote 2 for "Effective Rooting Depth" of the Chipeta silty
clay loam on Table 2.04.9-1 is missing. Please provide this footnote.
(C). The following comments pertain to Table 2.04.9-8 "Depth of
suitable Topsoil Material by Map Unit".
