COIORADO
HISTORICAL
SOCIETY
~tC~~~'~JI~D
OCT 0 5 2006
Division of Recia~naiwn,
Mining and Safety
The Colorado History Museum 1300 Broadway Denver, Colorado 80203.2137
September 29, 2006 {{~~ ~~~
Kent A. Gorham SGr~
Environmental Protection Specialist II
Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Rm. 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Northfield Mine Permit (Permit No. C-2006-085) (CHS #48904)
Dear Mr. Gorham:
Thank you for your correspondence dated September 22, 2006 (received by our office on
September 28) concerning the project listed above.
W e look forward to reviewing the results of the cultural resources inventory of the proposed permit
area so that we may provide a response regarding the proposed mining operation's potential to
effect cultural resources listed or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places
(NRHP).
Please note that the seazch of the Colorado Inventory of Cultural Resources conducted on January
30, 2006 at the request of Environmental Alternatives, Inc. for Northfield Partners examined a
smaller location (Sections 13, 14, 15, 22, and 23 of T19S R70W) than the proposed permit area
described in your correspondence (Sections 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 22, 23 and 24 of T19S R70W).
A search of the Colorado Cultural Resource Inventory indicated that ten cuitural resom ces have
been recorded within or near the larger permit azea described in your correspondence. The
eligibility of six of these resources for the NRHP has never been formally determined. If these six
sites (SFN14, SFN152, SFN153, SFN177, SFN713, and SFN714) are located within the proposed
permit area we recommend that a professional archaeologist revisit the sites to determine, in
consultation with our office, whether they remain eligible for the NRHP or if conditions have
changed since they were last investigated in the early 1970s and 1980s. If the sites are found to be
eligible for the NRHP we recommend that the proposed mining activities avoid the sites. If site
avoidance is not possible, we recommend that a data recovery plan be developed in consultation
with our office in order to avoid, minimize, or mitigate the adverse effect to the sites.
Re: Northfield Mine Permi[ (Permit No. G2006-085) (CHS #48904)
