of the permit application) the total overburden to be excavated
was calculated to be approximately 5,003,000 BCY. However, the
total overburden to be excavated is noted as 5,212,000 BCY on
Figure 2A of Addendum II. The total overburden to be excavated
based on Table 2 of Addendum II was difficult to calculate be-
cause of problems which are discussed later in this portion of
the TEA (i.e., coal removal volumes could not be correctly calcu-
lated using the numbers given on Table 2). However the total
overburden plus coal to he excavated from Pit 2 based on Table 2
was calculated to be 6,584,000 BCY. By assuming the amount of
coal to be removed was the same for Tables 1 and 2, the amount of
overburden to be excavated, based on Table 2, was calculated to
be 5,772,000 BCY. The difference between Table 1 and Table 2 was
found to be an increase of the Phase VI proposed excavation .vol-
ume of 767,000 BCY from Table 1 to Table 2. Based on a compari-
son of the areal extent of Phase VI with the other Phases of Pit
2, the total volume of 1,150,000 BCY for Phase VI given on Table
2 of Addendum II is probably more correct than the Phase VI vol-
ume of 383,000 BCY given on Table 1, page •51 of Volume 1 of the
permit application submittal. No explanation for the discrepancy
between the overburden volumes as calculated from Tables 1 and 2
and the volumes as shown on Figure 2A could be found within the
permit application submittal or Addenda I or II.
In an effort tb determine which set of the excavated volume
figures was most correct, and to verify the differences in exca- y
voted and backfilled volumes as noted on Table 2 and Figure 2A of
Addendum II, the differences between the existing and proposed r
v
reclaimed contours as shown on Figure 2A were planimetered. For ~~
Pit 1 the volumetrics given on Figure 2A were evidently not based h
v
on the contours as shown on Figure 2A because Phase V (the
boundaries of Phase V were determined by overlaying Figure 2A on ~
Figure 2 of Addendum II) as shown has much more than 16,000 BCY
of material to be excavated. However, the difference between the
"existing" contours and the proposed reclaimed contours was cal-
culated .and the difference in excavated and backfilled volumes
-54-
