CANADIAN STRIP MINING AND RECLAMATION PLAN
TECHNICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Background
The Canadian Strip Mine is an
operation located in Jackson County,
miles east of the town of Walden. TI
1. The mine is operated by the
subsidiary of Kansas-Nebraska Natural
federal leases, #C-30168 and #C-27931.
existing surface mining
Colorado approximately 12
ie site is shown on Figure
Wyoming Fuel Company, a
Gas Company, Inc. on two
Wyoming Fuel Company has filed an application with the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division and the Office of
Surface Mining to mine additional coal at the Canadian Strip mine
site. The application covers a permit term of five years and
involves an expansion of the existing mine. The applicant has
stated that the area to be permitted involves 500 acres, of which
170 acres will be disturbed by mining and associated operations
during the proposed five year permit term (page 2, CMLDR
Application, Volume 1 of the permit application).
Total production for the mine during the permit term is
estimated to be 1,055,000 tons. During that time, maximum
production should approach 300,000 tons in 1983 and 1984.
The application to mine during the proposed permit term was
originally submitted in April, 1981. The application was subject
to several completeness reviews and was ultimately deemed ready
for a Technical and Environmental Analysis (TEA) in August,
1961. This document presents the results of the TEA and sets
forth the stipulations necessary to bring the application into
compliance with the Colorado Permanent Regulatory Program.
