The only well within the permit and adjacent areas is com-
pleted in the Upper Sandy Member of the Pierre Formation. It is
located in the Bolton Draw drainage and belongs to Kerr Coal
Company. The legal location is the SE 1/4 of Section 35, T9N
R78W. This well is filed under Permit No. 02653-F and has been
assigned an appropriation of 3 ac-ft/yr, with a maximum pumping
rate of 15. gpm. Water from the well is used for equipment wash-
ing and showers at the Kerr Mine.
The applicant has received approval to install a well in the
SW 1/4 SW 1/4 of Section 2, TSN R78W (page 82, Vol. I of the
permit application). The well is filed under Permit No. 117184
and has been assigned an appropriation of 4 ac-ft/yr, with a
maximum pumping rate of 15 gpm. It is to be used for sanitation
purposes at the Canadian Strip Mine.
As previously discussed, the alluvium along both Bolton Draw
and its tributary, the North Fork of Bolton Draw have been iden-
tified as hydrologic zones. Baseline studies conducted by the
applicant indicate that these streams contain potential alluvial
valley floors in the study area that could be affected by mining
operations at the site. The study area consists of a two-mile
radius surrounding the permit area and is shown on Exhibit 2,
Volume I of the permit application. It was acknowledged in the
permit application that the Canadian River and Michigan River
were alluvial valley floors, but the Canadian River is suffi-
ciently removed from the permit area to be unaffected by mining
operations there, and the Michigan River does not receive flow
from the mine site.
Alluvial materials have been mapped along both North Fork
and Bolton Draw on Exhibit 2 and Figure 3 of the permit applica-
tions. North Fork, with a drainage area of 1.8 squareiniles, is
characterized by 14.4 acres of an unnamed alluvial soil unit.
Bolton Draw with a drainage area of 10.6 square miles, flows
along the east boundary of the permit area and is lined with
-26-
