The Canadian Strip Mine itself is located in the eastern
central portion of the intermontane basin referred to as North
Park. The basin reflects the underlying North Park Syncline, a
broad, southeast-plunging structure. The tectonic forces which
created the North Park Syncline also resulted in formation of
local folds and faults which are known to have displacements of
10 to 100 feet or more in the permit area. The mine is located
on one such fold, the McCallum Anticline, which is doubly-plung-
ing, assymetrical, and trends north-northwest. As a reflection
of the underlying structural geology, North Park is characterized
by gently rolling hills bisected by shallow valleys carrying
predominately intermittent streams.
The permit area is contained within the Canadian River basin
on the west side of the river. More specifically, the permit
area is located on the north side of Bolton Draw near the divide
between Bolton Draw and Bush Draw; Pit 2 is drained by the North
Fork of Bolton Draw while Pit 1 is drained by an unnamed ephem-
eral stream which flows into Bolton Draw approximately one-half
mile below the permit area (Figure 2 and Plate of the permit
applications).
The dominant land slope is to the east in the Pit 1 area and
to the southeast in the Pit 2 area. Although not given in the
permit application, premining slopes have been estimated from
maps within the permit application. There is a distinct break in
land slope between the northern third and the southern two-thirds
of Pit 2. The southern two-thirds drains directly into the North
Fork of Bolton Draw with land slopes grading from 20 percent in
the northern portion of this area to four percent in the southern
portion. The northern third of Pit 2 has a landslope of one per-
cent and is drained to the northeast by a small ephemeral stream
which joins the North Fork of Balton Draw (Figure 2 Section
2.05,and, Figure 2A Addendum II, of the permit application).
Based on a USGS topographic map (Plate 4, Appendix C of the per-
mit application) natural landslopes within the Pit 1 area were
six to eight percent.
-20-
