12 <br />Included with this soil in mapping are some areas where <br />slopes are more than 30 percent and others where they are less <br />than 5 percent; small areas of Youman and Passar soils; and <br />some areas where this Cochetopa soil is underlain by sandstone <br />and has redder subsoil than the one described in the represen- <br />tative poofile. Included soils make up about 10 percent of <br />the total acreage. <br />Nearly all the acreage is native range and is used for <br />grazing in summer and fall. Runoff is medium to r¢pid, <br />depending on slope. The erosion hazard is moderate. Capabil- <br />ity units VIe-1 irrigated, VIe-4 nonirrigated; Sub alpine Loam <br />range site." <br />II <br />I' <br />I1 <br />i~ <br />I, <br />I' <br />I1 <br />Il_ <br /> <br /> <br />t <br />i~ <br />The following information regarding the Nutras Series has been taken from <br />Hunter and Spears (1975) <br />~s <br />"The Nutras series consists of deep, well-drained soils <br />on ridgetops, mesas, and basalt flows. Slopes are 10 to 50 <br />percent. These soils formed in stony material derived from <br />latite basalt, which is resistant to weathering. <br />Typically, these soils have a I~-inch mat of undecomposed <br />and partly decomposed needles, bark, and twigs. In a <br />representative profile the mineral surface layer is white stony <br />loam about 9 inches thick. The subsurface layer is about <br />6 inches of mixed pinkish-gray and reddish-brown stony clay <br />loam. The subsoil is reddish-brown extremely stony clay <br />about 25 inches thick. The substratum to a depth of 60 inches <br />is reddish-brown extremely stony clay. <br />Nutras soils are at elevations of 10,000 to 11,500 feet. <br />The annual precipitation is more than 20 inches. The average <br />annual soil temperature is 30~F. The native vegetation is <br />commonly Engelmann spruce, sub al pine fir, and scattered aspen. <br />The understory is Fendler bluegrass, spike trisetum, russet <br />buffaloberry, mountain birch, and alder. <br />Permeability is slow, and available water capacity is <br />moderate. Roots can penetrate to a depth of 60 inches or rtiore. <br />These soils are used chiefly for woodland, widllife, and <br />watershed. <br />Representative profile of Nutras stony loam, 10 to 50 <br />percent slopes, in a wooded area east of Powderhorn Creek; <br />N1/2 sec. 33, T. 45 N., R.2., Elinsdale County: <br />Ol-4 inches to 0, undecomposed organic material grading <br />to partially decomposed material, chiefly needles, <br />bark, and twigs. <br />A2-0 to 9 inches, white (lOYR 8/?_) stony loam, very <br />pale brown (lOYR 7/3) moist; moderate, thin, platy <br />structure parting to moderate, very fine, granu]ar; <br />soft, very friable; about 30 percent stones, <br />cobblestones, and gravel; pli 5.4; gradual, smooth <br />boundary. <br /> <br />
